The Wimshurst's Machine is an italian 8-members electro-acoustic chillout orchestra.
The Wimshurst's Machine is a project born by the music passion of each component and a mad idea, developed between friends and colleagues with little time to play together "in person". Thanks to modern softwares and computers (as Propellerhead Reason, Apple Garage Band, Sound Studio Pro, Symphonic Orchestra and Apple Soundtrack), it has become possible to play together even when living apart, recording each track separated from the others with modern "home made studios".
This Wimshurst's Machine's first album ("A traveller who didn't ask for glory", 2004) is based on the notion that ancient explorers lived most of their lives through violent but incredible adventures. In this album you may read (and listen to) a story that tells about an ancient traveler that obtained glory while he was searching for himself across the world.
In "The Alchemist" (TWM's second album, Statue Records, 2005) the storytelling is about an Alchemist, during the spanish late middle age. Also in this other album you may listen to more than 1 hour of music, ideally the soundtrack of the story the CD itself is telling (that you may also read from the inlay card), flowing as in a movie.
Why this name?
There is nothing as fascinating as an old technology, so we chose this old precursor that made possible even the use of electricity in modern times. The choice happened by chance, talking in a brewery, while looking for an original band name that would show the world how complicated but fascinating our project is.
Influences:
That's very difficult to say. We just play what's going on in our heads and hearts, so I must say each one of us likes different kinds of music, but the union of the 8 of us created something that looks like "Café Del Mar", the "Penguin Café Orchestra" or "Buddha Bar" as a 1st impression. We like the idea to set a mood for the complete album, that has to be an experience in itself and not "just" a collection of songs.
Equipment used:
We do have plenty of acoustic instruments, from Saxophones (soprano, alto, tenor and bari), clarinet, flutes, guitars (classic and spanish), trumpets, dulcimer, bagpipes, mandolin, drums and lots of others... but we have also plenty of electric guitars, many different MIDI keyboards/controllers and so on. At the same time we also use powerful softwares, to record our music professionally but at low cost.
The Alchemist:
The Alchemist in an album made of two parts. The first part is dedicated to mankind and the thought, inventions and dreams who are always part of the human history.
The 2nd part is a suite of 8 tracks that give the title to the album itself: "The Alchemist", that you may listen as separate songs (with the exception for the 2 intermezzo tracks) or taste reading the story in the album booklet while listening to it as they were it's soundtrack.
Before let you go...
The band decided to give the money raised with the CD sales to Madagascar's orphans (as distance adoption: the band members will use the money as extra out of their personal donations).

The Wimshurst's Machine (o più semplicemente TWM) è un gruppo che nasce nel 2003 dall'unione di due appassionati di Computer music, Augusto Chiarle e Fabio Rodi, producendo musica elettronica a cui vengono aggiunte sonorita' acustiche, etniche e d'ambiente. Al nucleo primordiale cominciano quindi a collaborare alcuni altri musicisti (Roberto Canone, Massimiliano Baudissard, Antonio Rapacciuolo, Daniele Scerra, Duilio Chiarle ed Elvis Bergero, al momento), alternandosi nei vari brani senza prevaricazioni a seconda delle necessità.
Le musiche sono di volta in volta elettroniche, re-interpretazioni di brani tradizionali irlandesi o antichi, influenzate dalla passione e dal gusto dei singoli componenti.

Influenze:
Sono tante, quindi è difficile da definire una fonte d'ispirazione vera e propria: gli 8 membri della band arrivano da esperienze molto diversificate (Jazz, funky, elettronica, leggera, classica). Sicuramente l'effetto complessivo è simile a quanto potete trovare in compilation del tipo di "Buddha Bar" o "Cafè del Mar".
Perché questo nome?
Non c'è nulla di così strano e affascinante come un'antica tecnologia, così abbiamo scelto il nome del primo generatore elettrico dell'umanità per rappresentare il nostro complesso ma (speriamo) affascinante progetto musicale. La scelta è stata casuale, avvenuta parlando tra amici in birreria, ma il nome è rimasto.
CD pubblicati:
Il primo CD pubblicato ("A traveller who didn't ask for glory", Statue Records 2004) è basato sul concetto che la vita degli antichi esploratori (vedi ad esempio Marco Polo) era pervasa di avventure incredibili, purtroppo quasi sempre violente ma comunque meravigliose. Nel CD si racconta la storia di un viaggiatore che trovò la gloria mentre cercava se stesso esplorando il mondo, le cui avventure potrete leggere nella inlay card.
Il Secondo CD pubblicato ("The Alchemist", Statue Records 2005) racconta invece la storia di un alchimista vissuto nel tardo medioevo spagnolo e delle sue disavventure. Idealmente la colonna sonora di una storia, lunga più di un'ora, che vi farà vivere le sue stesse esperienze, che potrete seguire leggendole nel libretto del CD.
L'Alchimista
Questo album è diviso in due parti. La prima raccoglie brani tematici, legati alle scoperte, invenzioni ed alla curiosità che da sempre accompagnano la storia dell'uomo.
La seconda parte è invece quella che da il titolo all'album: una suite di 8 brani dal titolo "L'Alchimista" che potrete ascoltare come singoli brani (eccezion fatta per i due brevi intermezzi) o che potrete assaporare seguendo la storia narrata nel booklet del disco.
I proventi di entrambi i CD pubblicati (che qui trovate in vendita a prezzo scontato) sono destinati ad un'organizzazione no-profit che si occupa di adozioni a distanza di orfani del Madgascar (la band integra con i proventi dei CD le donazioni annuali personali dei membri del gruppo).

A: That we do play relaxing music, that we don't have to live with money made with our songs... eh, eh! ...and that I think I'm expressing the musical dreams I have ever had!
Q: Why did you choose the Tenor and Baritone Saxophones, Synth, Programming?
A: Well, I did start to play it in 1982, at the age of 12. I choose the sax cause of his sound, that I did always love. The other came since I just love my Macintosh computers...
Q: How would you describe yourself?
A: An ironic giant.

A: Music, of course! And movies... and a lot of other stuff, when I have time for that!

A: Marillion, at 1st place, but also Alan Parsons, Mike Oldfield, Dream Theater, David Arkenstone, Clannad, Loreena McKennit... and Alan Stivell and Vincenzo Zitello and prokofiev... well, there are a lot more but I don't want to write a book long as the holy bible full of names! LOL

Nato nel 1970, inizia a suonare il sax nel 1982 ed affronta vari generi, dal bandistico al melodico all'elettronico al rock, frequentando gli ambienti piu' disparati. Quattro nomi segnano il suo trascorso musicale adolescenziale: un inizio in gioventu' con La Canavese Band, con parti da solista (con la quale vince anche svariati concorsi bandistici nazionali, incide 2 dischi e prende il diploma di teoria e solfeggio) ed un quartetto blues-dixieland "di studio" (sax, tromba, clarino e flicorno), ma l'influenza del rock si fa sentire quando entra nei Wesen (gruppo funky-rock dedito alle cover di Dire Straits e Level42, ma mai realmente decollato per problemi cronici con cantante e tastierista) e The Unicorn (in comune col fratello Duilio e Fabio Rodi, e in aggiunta a chitarra elettrica e basso), prima esperienza su "musica propria" (al cui periodo si deve anche una stesura piu' acustica di "mountain sunrise", brano scritto dal fratello Duilio). Ma la musica non diviene mai attivita' importante in seguito alla carriera lavorativa intrapresa, cosicche' si deve attendere l'avvento di softwares come Apple Soundtrack e Propellerhead Reason per avere il suo ingresso nell'ambito del mixaggio e della composizione, del re-mixaggio e della colonna sonora per il cinema amatoriale. In questo periodo si hanno due concorsi per re-mixaggi (Anoraknophobia remix contest, in collaborazione con l'amico Gian Paolo Barra, e Ada De Luque remix contest) che permettono di farsi un'esperienza nel campo, ed ecco che quindi nascono anche i progetti di colonna sonora per due film, "Minzione impossibile" (colonna sonora di Fabio Rodi) e "Alien Evolution" cui compartecipa con l'amico tastierista Fabio Rodi a creare un'atmosfera elettronica d'ambiente. Ed ecco che nasce, da questa ri-unione, il progetto "The Wimshurst's Machine", che ha il suo nucleo fondatore proprio in Augusto e Fabio. Band/musicisti preferiti: Marillion, Dream Theater, Alan Parsons, Mike Oldfield, Genesis, David Arkenstone, Prokofiev, Vangelis, Gerry Mullighan. Strumentazione: Suona un eccellente sax tenore Selmer Mark VII (bocchini ebanite Vandoren e Berg Larsen, ance med-soft La Voz), un ottimo Sax Baritono Mason Pro, un onnipresente Sintetizzatore Yamaha WX11 Wind-MIDI controller ed una Tastiera muta interfacciati con i suoi iBook G4-800 e iMac G4-800, strumenti pilotati e registrati tramite Propellerhead Reason, Symphonic Orchestra, Apple Garage Band ed Apple Soundtrack Pro. Il WX11 è collegato tramite adattatori M-Audio SportUSB e Yamaha BT7 al computer ed a un synth rack Korg M3N. Il lavoro di montaggio e mixaggio delle tracce audio avviene tramite Apple Soundtrack Pro (tutti gli strumenti acustici) a 24 bit, ma sono utilizzati (per le fasi intermedie) anche Apple Garage Band, Propellerhead Reason 2.5 ed altri.
Roberto Canone - Saxophones, clarinet, keyboards

Roberto Canone, sax player of The Wimshurst's Machine, was born in 1965 in La Spezia, Italy. Diplomated to the city conservatory in clarinet, he is a clarinet and sax player since he was 16 ("Roller band", that was playing in discotheques, and "Antonio Maenza Orchestra Spettacolo"). At the age of 24 the marriage meant the end of touring as session man, but it started a collaboration with the bands named "Buana band", "Buena Onda" and "Invidia". Recently he has played with "Anthynea 70" (cover band of disco-music from 70s and 80s) and with the "011" (R&B). Since 2003 he joined "The Wimshurst's Machine" project, where he still plays and works also as songwriter. Instruments: tenor, alto and soprano saxes, classical flute, keyboards.

A: I started to play 25 years ago, and in all this time I did try countless different music genders, so I just love the possibility to play this new music adventure.

A: Because they are incredibly fascinating, of course.

A: I'm restless.

Nato nel 1965 a La Spezia, all'età di 14 anni si iscrive al conservatorio di La Spezia, dove si diploma in clarinetto 7 anni più tardi. Già dall'età di 13 anni inizia a suonare nei locali, ed a 16 anni entra a far parte del gruppo "Roller band", che suonava nelle discoteche in Versilia e non solo. Intorno ai 18 anni entra a far parte dell'orchestra-spettacolo "Antonio Maenza", girando l'Italia in tournée. Sempre di questi anni varie esperienze come musicista su navi da crociera e la "Big band" di Livorno. A 24 anni il matrimonio pone fine alle orchestra-spettacolo. Dopo qualche anno di matrimonio e varie crisi di astinenza da musica, entra nel gruppo reggae torinese "Buana band". Contemporaneamente entra a far parte del gruppo R&B "Buena onda", con il quale vince una gara riservata a gruppi emergenti (al secondo posto si classifica una band il cui cantante era Samuel, ora leader dei Subsonica). Sempre di questo periodo la collaborazione (con il resto della sezione fiati dei Buena Onda) con la band "Invidia" (con Samuel tra i coristi). Sempre con i "Buena Onda" partecipa all'importante manifestazione a carattere nazionale "Ravagnasco festival". Dal 1998 entra a far parte del gruppo "Anthynea70" specializzato nella dance anni '70 e '80, con i quali suona fino al 2004. Sempre di questi anni la collaborazione col gruppo R&B "011 per chi chiama da fuori" di Torino. Strumentazione: sax tenore Selmer "Super Action 80" (con bocchino metallo Otto-link e bocchino metallico Berg Larsen, ance preferite Medium-Soft La Voz). Sax contralto Conn (con bocchino metallico Otto-link e in ebanite Meyer, ance La Voz), clarinetto Selmer (con bocchino in ebanite Vandoren e ance Vandoren), flauto traverso Yamaha, pianoforte verticale Steinberger. Di recente si sono aggiunti un sax soprano Fremont (bocchino Yamaha Custom, ora, ahime!, distrutto, bocchino di stock originale) ed una tastiera muta per la composizione a computer con Propellerhead Reason 2.5.

A: This band don't smell of sweat and smoke and beer... just kidding... I just adore the modernity and the brain of the musicians.
Q: Why did you choose the Electric Guitar?
A: When I was a boy I had a real passion for heavy metal, then I had some friend who neede a guitarist. So, here I was, embracing for the 1st time an electric guitar and ready to make some mess. After all I did always play just same things...
Q: How would you describe yourself?
A: The roads have no end, specially when you get lost.
Q: Hobbies:
A: Well, illustrations and 3D graphics. To be honest, music is my hobby, while graphics/illustrations are my job!
Q: Your favorite bands?
Q: Pink Floyd, Queen, dream theater, Deep Purple and Black Sabbath. I just adore also classical soundtrack composers as Elliot Goldenthal and Jerry Goldsmith!

Nasce a Rivoli (TO) nel 1973.Si avvicina alla musica al liceo e presto forma una band (DEF), attratto dalla chitarra elettrica e dalla musica metal.
Presto viene a contatto di gruppi Jazz e Blues con i quali cimentarsi in sala prove, acquisendo maggior dimestichezza nell'improvvisazione.
Nel 1992 inizia lo studio più approfondito dello strumento sulle partiture di grandi chitarristi quali Yngwie Malmsteen e Steve Vai.
La passione per le colonne sonore lo fa avvicinare alla Computer Music, che gli permette di esprimersi al meglio anche come solista.

A: That we could make a good CD in just 9 months of work, even if we didn't know each other at the start of the project.

A: They're challenging instruments that never forgive who don't pratice enough. Anyway the result, after a good gig, is priceless.

A: I could have done much better if I just had the possibility.

Nasce a Castellammare di Stabia nel 1978 e tra i suoi interessi il pianoforte e quindi il principale, la tromba, grazie allo stimolo che il suo primo e unico maestro (Silvio Caligaris) gli infuse. Decise che il suo futuro sarebbe stato la tromba e si profuse in quello che non esitò a definire in seguito il più discontinuo degli studi da autodidatta. Dopo aver suonato con tante (troppe) bande di paese ho preso 6 mesi di lezioni dalla prima tromba del Teatro Regio (in pratica autodidatta). Secondo classificato in un tristissimo concorso dell'istituto musicale Cuneo di Ciriè (una nota di colore: il primo ed unico della storia fra gli strumentisti a fiato). Solista con bande e "bande orchestre" con diversi viaggi, fra i quali una Tournée negli Stati Uniti con concerti sotto le Torri Gemelle (prima del triste evento) ed un concerto nel Campus dell'Università di Washington (sede di riprese anche per il film L'Esorcista... questa è spettacolare!). Ha collaborato con diversi gruppi (soprattutto funky e jazz) e con uno di questi (Groove Machine) ha partecipato a "Trenta Ore Per La Vita" con (così gliel'hanno venduta, ma le telecamere c'erano) passaggi televisivi in diretta su Canale 5 che, ovviamente, non hanno visto visto perche' suonavano.

A: That we don't need to play all together to record a song, Mostly I record all by myself so I don't have to hear loudy brasses that would destroy my ears!
Q: Why did you choose the Keyboards?
A: I started with clarinet, but since I'm lazy and I didn't like to throw my breath into a non-polyphonic instrument, I decided to change into Piano, Organ and Harpsichord.
Q: How would you describe yourself?
A: I'm sitting, at this time.

A: To admire my dog. To sing, to play, to act, and anything silly.

A: The Bachs, Mozarts, Corellis, Scarlatti&sons, then add any classical composer you want.

Classe 1969, suona la Batteria dall'età di 14 anni.
Dopo molte esperienze musicali con gruppi minori, la sua Formazione musicale prende corpo nel 1997 con lezioni private da Luciano ALI' e nell'anno 1998 con Alessia MATTALIA (Batterista dei BINARIO) conosciuta attraverso uno stage estivo organizzato dalla DRUM SOUND.
Dal Novembre 1998 al Febbraio 2000 fa parte del gruppo LONELY STAR presentando alla scena Torinese un repertorio di cover ROCK anni '70 (Lynyrd Skynyrd, Black Crowes, Rolling Stones, Sheryl Crow e Tracy Chapman).
Dal Marzo 2000 al Dicembre 2002 è il Batterista dei SIXAPPEAL.
Band formata da 7 elementi con alcuni di spicco della musica Torinese come il Sassofonista delle Band "Le trombe di Falloppio", "Vascover" (band ufficialmente riconosciuta da Vasco Rossi che vanta collaborazioni con Maurizio SOLIERI) e "Bullone & Dements" (quest'ultima ha accompagnato Marco Carena a San Scemo), il Bassista dei "BigMama" Band Pinerolese di cover Dance anni '80 conosciuta in tutto il Piemonte.
Con questa Band suona in tutti i più importanti locali Torinesi presentando un tributo ai SIMPLY RED accompagnato da artisti d'eccezione come Stevie Wonder, Terence Trend d'Arbie e Diane Shurr.
I SIXAPPEAL vantano inoltre una DEMO particolarmente riuscita che è stata trasmessa su RADIO CENTRO 95 in occasione degli appuntamenti estivi del 2001 come al "Parco la Tesoriera" dove loro vi hanno partecipato nel mese di Luglio.
Attualmente si trova impegnato in due progetti:
1. Suona in una cover-band dedicata ai LEVEL42
2. Collabora alla stesura di brani inediti con THE WIMSHURTST'S MACHINE.

Q: What do you like most about 'The Wimshurst's Machine'?
A: The extraordinary number of musical tastes, the musical skills of my "band colleagues", that are very good musicians. We do have different musical tastes but
Augusto's "direction" can focus our energies to melt and
mix our tastes with good results.
Q: Why did you choose the Acoustic and Classic Guitars?
A: Nice question... Ah, yes! Because that time someone said that who was learning guitar had more chances with gals... but wasn't true, exactly for the same reason I didn't catch them just having a bike! ...Now the saying is that if you do play bagpipe you may carouse better... or with african percussions... Of course is all a bullshit, but this way a lot of people is learning every gender of instrument.
Q: How would you describe yourself?
A: I can do everything, but just learnt how to do it well, I loose interest in it.
Q: Hobbies:
A: I handcraft medieval armors, some say I'm pretty skilled. I'm proud of this hobby, since I made some also for historical groups. And also to work with wood, to read (just love history), to write novels and poetries, etc. It may seems weird, but even with my work and hobbies, I can find time to sleep!
Q: Your favorite bands?
A: Genesis, Marillion. But also single artists as Sting, Fish, Rick Wakeman, Massimo Giuntini... There are many.

A: The persian arrows are obscuring the sun? Better, we may then not fight under the sunburst!

Nato nel 1959, ha compiuto gli studi musicali presso l'istituto musicale F.A. Cuneo di Ciriè (chitarra classica, teoria e solfeggio). Appassionato di musica antica, nutre una forte attrattiva per le sonorità della musica tradizionale spagnola e per gli strumenti musicali "esotici". E' l'autore di brani come "Mountain Sunrise", "New Horizons" o "O Alquimista", il primo dei quali originariamente scritto negli anni '80 per il gruppo musicale "The Unicorn" ma inciso per la prima volta con "The Wimshurst's Machine". Strumentazione: Chitarra classica (utilizza preferenzialmente una classica Hondo ed una classica Ferrarotti studio costruita su misura, sulla quale usa un mix di corde con bassi Augustine blu e nylon Savarez rosse), chitarra spagnola, chitarra acustica, chitarra folk, mandolino napoletano, banjo tenore a 5 corde, chitarra acustica elettrificata 6 corde, chitarra acustica elettrificata 12 corde "Ovation", liuto arabo, dulcimer appalachiano, chitarra basso acustica... e qualsiasi strumento a corde acustico gli capiti per le mani!

A: The incredible enthusiasm of my friend Gut, that can make you feel the same.
Q: Why did you choose the Keyboards?
A: Since I was a boy I did just love electronic music, and this did push me into this direction and instrument.

A: If just I could complete something I did start!

Nato a Torino nel 1970, comincia a suonare la tastiera nel 1987 con i "The unicorn" con una tastiera Farfisa. Fin dall'inizio e' attratto dalla Computer Music e comincia a fare i primi esperimenti in tal senso con un commodore 64 e un programma apposito, ispirandosi liberamente a
J.M.Jarre. Acquista il suo primo sinth (un Kaway K1) nel 1989. In seguito si cimenta come batterista con i "Dr Crazy", tra il 1993 e il 1995, suonando cover di gruppi heavy metal. Nel frattempo continua ad evolvere lo studio con synth e computer, ma fino al 2003 continua come solista, sperimentando sempre nuovi sound, fino a che un nuovo incontro con l'amico Augusto (anch'egli ex-The Unicorn) non lo convince a fondare i TWM, seguendo il proprio interesse comune per la computer-music. Sempre di quel periodo i temi musicali per il corto umoristico "Minzione impossibile" e del 2004 la partecipazione alla colonna sonora di un mediometraggio di fantascienza destinato alla televisione, "Alien Evolution" (2005).
