The Wimshurst's Machine is an eclectic, award-winning 8-members italian electro-acoustic "steam" orchestra based in Torino.

TWM plays a mix of acoustic and electronic music, sometimes inspired by ancient or traditional tunes (Irish, indian or spanish), mixed with modern sounds, from chill-out to jazz, with a mix of acoustic and electronic instruments. The Wimshurst's Machine is a project born by the music passion of each component and a mad idea, developed between friends and colleagues with little time to play together "in person". Together with the "good old" way to make music, TWM mixes (also thanks to modern softwares and computers such as Propellerhead Reason, Apple Garage Band, Symphonic Orchestra, Sound Studio Pro, Apple Soundtrack, Ableton Live, or the iPhone/iPad technology) real instruments and synthetic sounds even during live events.
Between all the soundtracks and awards of the band we will note the Hollywood Music in Media Award nominations (twice, in both 2010 and 2011), the Music Aid (2007), the International Online Music Awards (2006 and 2007). Best soundtrack placement with "Freedom Calls" as main titles of the british movie "The Quiet Assassin" (directed by Alex Hardcastle, Channel4, 2006) but the band scored many sountracks for documentaries, stage plays and movies all around the world (and this partially explains also the particularly eclectic band's style).
The Wimshurst's Machine's first album ("A traveller who didn't ask for glory", 2004) is based on the notion that ancient explorers lived most of their lives through violent but incredible adventures. In this album you may read (and listen to) a story that tells about an ancient traveler that obtained glory while he was searching for himself across the world. This album reached #2 Top downloaded Electronic album and #26 Overall on the iTunes italian online store on January 12 and 13, 2005!
In "The Alchemist" (TWM's second album, 2005) the storytelling is about an Alchemist, during the spanish late middle age. Also in this other album you may listen to more than 1 hour of music, ideally the soundtrack of the story the CD itself is telling (that you may also read from the inlay card in the original edition), flowing as in a movie. An audiobook version of the booklet is available for free download in the "music" section of the official TWM's website.
The 3rd album, "Time Traveller" (2007), is a project made of 37 tracks in a double CD edition which includes also an 18 pages full-colors booklet with a complete novel written by Duilio Chiarle (in italian) and the great illustrations of Daniele Scerra (spectrum artist 2006). The album describes in music the novel. Digital version of the booklet downloadable for free in the official website of the band (explore it!). Out in 2007 also the collection "Freedom Lights" (sort of a "best of" 2003-2007) published by the british indie label Astranova only on iTunes, with a remastered selection of tracks from the first two albums and two singles from the 3rd one. Cover art a concept-art by Augusto Chiarle.
In 2009 published "Secret Gardens", a 20 tracks CD who contains, together with some award-winning chillout hit such as "Cimmeria", "Low Tide", "Pegasus", "Pain in Pleasure" also 2 suites: "Moonshadows" (Vangelis's styled ambient) and "Secret Garden" (classical collection of TWM's compositions). Out in 2010, "Thunder and Lightning" where the novel told is about sort of a modern Noah, a scientist who discovers a great disaster is incoming but he has no time to warn the world. In the album also 4 spoken-word tracks narrated in italian by the young actress Evita Bonino. Out in 2010 also "Aquarius (the best of TWM)", a collection of all the most-wanted chillout tracks of TWM from 2003 to 2009. The best CD where start if you don't know yet the music of TWM. Cover art photo by Dorina Xhaxho.
Out in 2011, "Tokyo Rain" is again published by the indie british label Astranova and is a collection of works who sees The Wimshurst's Machine write music with the friend Corrado Rossi, with the cover art by Antonio Seijas, also cover artist for Marillion and many others.

Why the name "The Wimshurst's Machine"? There is nothing as fascinating as an old technology, so we chose this old precursor that made possible even the use of electricity in modern times. The choice happened by chance, talking in a brewery, while looking for an original band name that would show the world how complicated but fascinating our project is. Influences: Very difficult to say. We just play what's going on in our heads and hearts and I must say each one of us likes different kinds of music, but the union of the 8 of us created something that looks like "Café Del Mar" or "Buddha Bar" as a 1st impression. We like the idea to set a mood for the complete album, that has to be an experience in itself and not "just" a collection of songs.
Equipment used: We do have plenty of acoustic instruments, from Saxophones (soprano, alto, tenor and bari), clarinet, flutes, guitars (classic and spanish), trumpets, dulcimer, bagpipes, mandolin, drums and lots of others... but we have also plenty of electric guitars, many different MIDI keyboards/controllers and so on... even iPads! At the same time we also use powerful softwares, to record our music professionally but at low cost.
Before let you go... While several bandmembers do support a non-profit organization for distance adoption of Madacascar's children (with personal donations), the band (as band) also decided to give the money raised with the CD sales for Charity (and precisely 50% of the money raised out of expenses), precisely, and support the Partners in Health project. The PIH Vision: At its root, their mission is both medical and moral. It is based on solidarity, rather than charity alone. When a person in Peru, or Siberia, or rural Haiti falls ill, PIH uses all of the means at their disposal to make them well from pressuring drug manufacturers, to lobbying policy makers, to providing medical care and social services. E' un gruppo che nasce nel 2003 dall'unione di due appassionati di Computer music, Augusto Chiarle e Fabio Rodi, producendo musica elettronica a cui vengono aggiunte sonorità acustiche, etniche e d'ambiente. Al nucleo primordiale cominciano quindi a collaborare alcuni altri musicisti (Roberto Canone, Massimiliano Baudissard, Antonio Rapacciuolo, Daniele Scerra, Duilio Chiarle ed Elvis Bergero, al momento), alternandosi nei vari brani senza prevaricazioni a seconda delle necessità. Le musiche sono di volta in volta elettroniche, re-interpretazioni di brani tradizionali irlandesi o antichi, influenzate dalla passione e dal gusto dei singoli componenti. In generale può essere anche definito come parte del genere "steampunk".
Una recensione ha scritto: "Ascoltando i TWM farete un viaggio in un mondo rilassante fatto di buona musica. La musica dei TWM è fatta di suoni elettronici ed acustici, a volte ispirato da brani tradizionali (indiani, irlandesi o spagnoli), misti a sonorità moderne dal chillout al jazz, dal new age all'ambient, il tutto suonato con un misto di strumenti acustici ed elettronici. La musica dei TWM vi farà sognare. Sogni che non vorrete dimenticare." (recensione pubblicata)
Influenze: Sono tante, quindi è difficile da definire una fonte d'ispirazione: gli 8 membri della band arrivano da esperienze molto diversificate (Jazz, funky, elettronica, leggera, classica, rock). Sicuramente l'effetto complessivo è simile a quanto potete trovare in compilation del tipo di "Buddha Bar" o "Café del Mar".
Riconoscimenti: vogliamo citare soprattutto le nomination agli Hollywood Music in Media Awards (sia nel 2010 che nel 2011), il Music Aid (2007) e gli International Online Music Awards (2005 e 2006).
Colonne sonore: molti brani sono stati usati come colonna sonora per documentari, film e teatro. Miglior piazzamento per "Freedom Calls" come titoli di testa per il film britannico "The Quiet Assassin" (diretto da Alex Hardcastle, Channel4, 2006).
Perché questo nome? Non c'è nulla di così strano e affascinante come un'antica tecnologia, così abbiamo scelto il nome del primo generatore elettrico dell'umanità per rappresentare il nostro complesso ma (speriamo) affascinante progetto musicale. La scelta è stata casuale, avvenuta parlando tra amici in birreria, ma il nome è rimasto.
Discografia:
Il primo CD pubblicato ("A traveller who didn't ask for glory", 2004 ) è basato sul concetto che la vita degli antichi esploratori era pervasa di avventure incredibili, purtroppo quasi sempre violente ma meravigliose. Nel CD si racconta la storia di un viaggiatore che trovò la gloria mentre cercava se stesso esplorando il mondo, le cui avventure potrete leggere nella inlay card.
Il Secondo CD pubblicato ("The Alchemist", 2005) racconta invece la storia di un alchimista vissuto nel tardo medioevo spagnolo e delle sue disavventure. Idealmente la colonna sonora di una storia, lunga più di un'ora, che vi farà vivere le sue stesse esperienze, che potrete seguire leggendole nel libretto del CD (per i fortunati possessori della prima edizione) o scaricare gratis nella sezione "musica" del sito ufficiale della band ("Travellers & Alchemists", in versione audiobook sia in italiano che in inglese).
Il terzo CD ("Time Traveller", 2007) è un doppio album contenente 37 brani per oltre due ore di musica e un booklet di 18 pagine a colori, che raccoglie testi delle canzoni ed un racconto lungo (in italiano) di Duilio Chiarle, illustrato dalle abili mani di Daniele Scerra (spectrum artist 2006). Una versione digitale del booklet si può anche scaricare dal sito ufficiale della band.
Disponibile una raccolta, "Freedom Lights" (2007), pubblicata dall'etichetta indipendente britannica Astranova, che raccoglie una versione rimasterizzata dei brani più belli dei primi due CD e due dei "singles" del terzo (disponibile, questo CD, solo su iTunes).
Nel 2009 è uscito "Secret Gardens", che contiene 20 brani inediti tra cui le hit chillout "Cimmerian Rhapdosy", "Pain in Pleasure", "Low Tide", "Pegasus", ma anche due suite vere e proprie: "Moonshadows" (nello stile ambient di Vangelis) e "Secret Garden" (di pura ispirazione classica).
"Thunder and Lightning" (2010) narra in musica la storia di un novello Noé, uno scienziato che si accorge di un disastro incombente ma troppo tardi per dare l'allarme e della stessa umanità fotografata in quell'ultimo istante, raccontata da diversi personaggi. Il tema è anche descritto in versione recitata in 4 brani dal titolo "Voice in the Rain" (voce nella pioggia, letteralmente) dalla giovane attrice Evita Bonino (in italiano). La storia si può scaricare gratis in PDF dal sito dei TWM.
Del 2010 anche "Aquarius (the best of TWM)", una raccolta con i brani chillout più gettonati dal 2003 al 2009, certamente l'album ideale con cui iniziare ad ascoltare i TWM se ancora non li si conosce.
"Tokyo Rain" (2011) è un album chillout, pubblicato da Astranova, che vede i TWM collaborare con l'amico pianista Corrado Rossi. Copertina una meravigliosa illustrazione di Antonio Seijas (già copertinista per Marillion e tanti altri).

Mentre diversi membri della band supportano con le loro donazioni un'organizzazione no-profit che si occupa di adozione a distanza di bambini del Madagascar, la band in quanto tale ha deciso di aumentare gli sforzi e di destinare una buona parte dei proventi dei CD pubblicati (per la precisione il 50% degli incassi, salvo le spese) ad un'organizzazione no-profit che si occupa di curare le malattie infettive nel Terzo Mondo: Partners in Health. La loro missione è sia medica che morale. E' basata sulla solidarietà oltre che solo sulla carità. Quando una persona in Perù, o in Siberia, o nelle zone rurali di Haiti si ammala, P.I.H. usa tutto ciò che ha a disposizione per farli stare bene (incluse pressioni sulle case farmaceutiche e quelle sulla politica), per provvedere alle cure mediche ed ai servizi sociali. "A traveller who didn't ask for glory" è stato nella Top10 tra i più venduti tra la musica elettronica nell'iTunes italian online store (iTunes è il principale centro di vendita legale di online di musica al mondo) tra il 6 ed il 13 gennaio 2005, tra nomi eccellenti quali Depeche Mode o Chemical Brothers (e da quando è iniziata la distribuzione è stato in Top100 per anni). Una canzone da questo disco ("Freedom Calls") è stata per due settimane tra le canzoni più richieste nella musica elettronica sempre su iTunes.
